I recently attended a Cody Miller swim clinic and picked up some advice I’d never heard before. Cody advises that at the end of your breaststroke kick, as you complete the full kick and your toes are pointed* lift your feet up a few inches.
*Be sure to point those toes!
Make sure you don’t turn the kick into a dolphin kick. It’s just a subtle but effective rise of the feet. According to Cody, most professional swimmers are using this technique. So I turned to YouTube to find out. Check out Breaststroke Technique Loop.
The first section has a great example in the second swimmer from the top (dark suit). But other swimmers in this loop are also using this technique.
Lately I’ve been fine-tuning my own breaststroke kick with wall kicks: Hands on the gutter, feet at the surface, kick like you can move the wall. Doing this allows to you isolate your kicking alone and really feel the stroke. Do about 10-15 kicks, then grab your board or snorkel and swim a 25 focusing on your kick.
See you at the pool!
